A computer network means two or more computers
connected together with special cables or devices to share information.
Millions of computers around the world which
are connected together to share information creates the Internet. It stands for
International Network.
Internet and its versatility has spread
worldwide like a fire in this decade. Internet is a major tool to communicate,
socialize, shop and work.
The Internet is a worldwide, publicly
accessible network, made up of thousands of interconnected
computer networks. No one has a idea about the number of computers connected to
the internet but the number is growing rapidly. The computers on the internet
communicate with each other using the Transmission Control Protocol/Internet
Protocol (TCP/IP).
So let’s read about the Key Terms of
Internet……
World Wide Web
The World Wide Web consists of files, called
pages or web pages, containing links to documents and resources throughout the
internet.
The World Wide Web (abbreviated Web or WWW)
was developed in 1989 by Tim Berners Lee in Switzerland. The initial
purpose of the Web was to use Networked hypertext to facilitate
communication among its members. A rapid growth in the number of both
developers and users led to incorporation of graphics, videos and sounds.
Hypertext
Hypertext is a document containing words that
connect to other documents. These words are called links and are selectable by
the user. A single hypertext documents, images, videos and sound. The entire
operation of Web mainly relies on hypertext.
HTML
Producing hypertext for the Web is
accomplished by creating documents with a language called Hyper Text Markup
Language (HTML). It provides a more flexible way to design web pages, along
with text With HTML, tags are replaced within the text for document formatting,
like font size, italics and bold, and the creation of hypertext links. Graphics
and multimedia can also be included in an HTML document.
Web Browser
A Web Browser is a software program that
allows users to access and navigate the web pages or World Wide Web (WWW).
URL
Uniform Resource Locator (URL), it
specifies the internet address of a file stored on a host computer connected to
the internet. Every file on the internet has a unique URL. Web Browsers use the
Uniform Resource Locator to retrieve the file from the host computer and the
specific directory in which it resides.
ISP
Internet Service Provider (ISP) is
the company that gives us access to the internet for fee. The browser will not
be able to display pages unless the computer is connected to an ISP (Internet
Service Provider). For example: TATA, AIRTEL, RELAINCE etc.
Web Page
Information is put on the Internet in the
form of digital pages called Web Pages. These pages may contain text, graphics,
video, audio and link to other pages.
Web Site
As a book contains a number of pages,
similarly a web site is a collection of many web pages linked together.
Home Page
Each website has a main page and it contains
link to other pages. When you visit any site, the first page that opens is
called the Home Page.
Multimedia
The Web has become a broadcast medium where
we can listen to audio and videos, both pre-recorded and live. For example, you
can visit the sites of news organizations and views the same videos shown on
the news. Several plug-ins are available for viewing these videos.
Earlier, the entire multimedia files, which
used to be quite large and took time in downloading, had to be downloaded
before viewing. This problem has been solved by a revolutionary development in
multimedia capability: Streaming Media.
In this case, audio or video
files are played as they are Downloading, or Streaming, into your
computer. Only a small wait, called Buffering, is necessary before the
file begins to play.
The Windows Media Player, RealPlayer and
QuickTime plug-ins play streaming audio and video files. Extensive files
such as interviews, speeches, hearings and televised video clips work very well
with these players. They are also ideal for the broadcast of real-time events.
Shockwave and Flash are
plug-ins that offers the creation and implementation of an entire multimedia
displays combining graphics, animations and sounds.
Live cams are another
aspect of the multimedia available on the Web. Live cams are video cameras
their send their data in real time to a Web Server.
Real-Time Communication
Text, audio and video communication can
happen in real-time (on-line) on the Web. These capabilities allow people to
conference and collaborate in real-time.
At its simplest, Chat programs allow multiple
users to type to each other in real time. More enhanced real-time communication
offers an audio and/or video component. The real-time communication tools
include:
- Chat: Type in real time
- Audio: Conduct a telephone conservation on the Web
- File Transfer: Send files back and forth among participants
- Document/Application Sharing: View and use a program on another’s desktop machine
